近日本港氣溫急升，在户外容易中暑，有人話因為全球暖化，天氣才如此極端，從前的夏天應該比現在舒適。其實，香港開埠初年氣候又如何？初次踏足這個遠東小島的英軍又有何感受？
根據1844年出版，英國東印度公司復仇女神號（Nemesis）的日誌，記錄香港1843年7月的氣溫中位數是華氏88度（攝氏31度），最高華氏92度（攝氏33度），最低也高達華氏84度（攝氏28.9度）。由此看來，170多前的香港和現在同樣相當炎熱，更未有冷氣、風扇以及雪櫃等科技產品。
1844年，英國東印度公司駐華指揮官薩爾頓少將（Lord Saltoun ）的副官根利咸上尉（Captain Arthur Cunynghame）也出版一書講述訪華的見聞，當中也提及開埠初年香港的氣候。根利咸有以下的評價：「香港的氣候一年有九個月都極之炎熱且殘酷，期間暴露在烈日之下會非常危險。 (“The climate of Hong Kong, for nine months of the year, is hot and oppressive during which time exposure to the sun is exceedingly dangerous.”)」如果他能與今日的我們對話，相信會很有共鳴。
除此之外，1843年香港還受熱病（Hong Kong Fever）等瘟疫所苦，導致373名英軍死亡，島上每家每戶不論華洋也有人離世。因此，「Go to Hong Kong」曾經成為洋人互謔的戲言。
開埠初年香港談不上是順景，根利咸卻看好香港的未來，認為香港港闊水深，又不常受颱風吹襲，是世上最優秀的海港之一。這就是香港被當時最強海權國家選為最佳立足點的原因。(“This is naturally the cause why Hong Kong was chosen as the appropriate spot for the greatest maritime nation of the world….”)
各代香港人都堅持克服了酷熱和疫症，走過180年以上的歲月。
